Did the Officer and Aircrew Selection at RAF Biggin Hill back in the late seventies, failed the Aircrew selection because of my eyesight but was told if I was willing to go through university and get a relevant degree I could get in as an officer, unfortunately at 17 I didn’t want to go through any more schooling, instead I returned home, went down to my local recruiting office and joined up as an Airframe Technician, in all honesty it was probably the best decision I ever made.

I watched the 1989 film about Bomber Harris. The great actor John Thaw played the role as this great man. Played him to a tee. Harris comes over in the film as taciturn individual. He was a professional combat airman. Knew war was dirty business. War is war! Especially with a-fanatical enemy like the nazi’s. Such an “Underrated man!”

When I enlisted in the RAF as an aircraft mechanic we were told that the RAF Regiment was for airfield defence. First posting RAF Ballykelly 1970, the I R A were shooting soldiers 17 miles down the road(Londonderry) with the latest M16 rifles, who was guarding the airfield, with pickaxe handles ? We were, the airmen/tradesmen, I never saw an RAF Regiment man in all my tour there, it was always us that did the guard as well as our regular duties. 2nd tour, R A F Colerne, during the I R A mainland bombing campaign, Colerne was the home of 2 Field Squadron R A F Regiment, who did the guard duties ? The tradesmen, again, we were guarding the guys who were suppossed to guard the aurfield ! 3rd tour Cyprus 1974, Turkish invasion time, 3 Field Squadron RAF Regiment were stationed at Akrotiri, who did the guard duties, again it was the tradesmen, the Regiment gallantly sunned themselves on the beach manning anti-aircraft guns, gallantly risking skin cancr to defend us from a non-existent air threat. GO ON, TELL ME ABOUT THE R A F REGIMENT !

In this interview "Bomber" Harris states that the casualty figure of 56,000 represented 3%. With my simple maths I deduce that 56,000/3 = 18,666 to give 1%. Times 100 = 1,866,666.66. That's 1.8 million personnel. My opinion is that Harris has included everyone including the NAAFI canteen to get his figure. It in no way represents the shocking loss of life among air crews which is more likely 50%. I notice most comments about this video are gushingly positive. Harris claims he was given orders where to bomb and in another breath, states he had some leeway. He was totally complicit in the bombing of civilians, treating them in a similar manner to his aircrews.

The tunnel was way more than 11 metres long. I think the Germans measured it at 111 yards which would make it over 100 metres. An incredible feat of engineering in the face of extreme difficulties

The Regiments history in WW2 was awesome. They were brought in to help hold the line in Italy, outside of their normal role. A couple of days later they were asked to be not so aggressive. They served in many theatres including North African, Sicily, cand Italy as well as at home and in the far east.

Shocking change really and i suppose this is the new age but back then the chaps just landed or pranged and in the aftermath gave the details to the squadron intelligence officer as part of squadron debriefing...... who took it down on an RAF prescribed form and then it was off to the officers mess and ale or beer or scotch shaken not stirred ...by the by the WAAFs were gorgeous and did stellar work back then ....during the great war ......carry on the new RAF 👍✌

Watching that I feel he put the record straight(er) even allowing for the fact that he may have embellished some the facts but my impression was he did't hide any failures or wrong decisions he may have made. Unlike today's leaders who don't want to be seen in a poor light. He was absolutely ruthless I believe. An old Lancaster nav friend of mine was very upset by the way the bomber forces were portrayed after war ended by the media particularly over Dresden and the lack of any memorial to the enormous crew losses sustained at that time. Glad to say that has been remedied. It was courageous to go out night after night facing death and I am sure the burden of the losses did weigh heavily on this great man.
